What glutathione is

Glutathione is a tripeptide built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The cysteine in the middle carries a sulfur-containing thiol group, and that thiol is the business end of the molecule, the part that does the antioxidant work. Glutathione exists in two forms: a reduced form (GSH), which is the active, protective version, and an oxidized form (GSSG) that results once it has neutralized a threat. How it works

Glutathione works through a continuous redox cycle. In its reduced form (GSH), it donates an electron to neutralize a free radical or to support enzymes like glutathione peroxidase that break down harmful peroxides. In doing so, two glutathione molecules link up into the oxidized form (GSSG). The body then regenerates the active form using the enzyme glutathione reductase, which draws on NADPH to convert GSSG back into GSH. This recycling loop is what allows a relatively modest pool of glutathione to provide ongoing protection, and it ties glutathione’s antioxidant work to the cell’s wider energy and metabolic systems.
