Semax vs Selank: Focus or Calm, and Why People Use Both

Nootropic peptides comparison research

Semax and Selank are the two best-known nootropic peptides, both developed in Russia, and they are frequently mentioned in the same breath. But they do close to opposite jobs. One sharpens, the other soothes. Knowing which is which makes it easy to understand why they are so often paired into a single focus-plus-calm combination.

Different roots, different jobs

Both peptides come from the Russian neuropeptide research tradition, but they descend from different parent molecules. Semax is derived from a fragment of the hormone ACTH, stabilized with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail. Selank is derived from tuftsin, a natural immune-regulating peptide, with a similar stabilizing extension. Those origins shape what each one does.

Semax: the focus and neuroprotection peptide

Semax is the stimulating, cognitive member of the pair. Its signature effect is raising two of the brain’s key growth factors, BDNF and NGF, which support neuroplasticity, learning, and memory (documented in work by Dolotov and Shadrina and colleagues). It also modulates dopamine and serotonin, which underpins its reputation for sharper focus and motivation. On top of that, it has a well-studied neuroprotective side, which is why it is used clinically in Russia for stroke recovery. If the goal is alertness, mental clarity, and brain protection, Semax is the one.

Selank: the calm and clarity peptide

Selank is the calming member. Its signature effect is anxiety relief without sedation, achieved by gently modulating the GABA system, the brain’s main calming network, rather than overriding it the way benzodiazepines do (research by Seregin showed effects comparable to diazepam but without the sedation, and Inozemtsev documented its influence on GABA-A receptor genes). It also raises BDNF and avoids the tolerance and dependence of traditional anti-anxiety compounds. If the goal is calm focus without drowsiness, Selank is the one.

Why they are often paired

Because one stimulates focus and the other promotes calm, Semax and Selank are natural complements rather than competitors. Used together, the combination is studied for a state of calm focus: the alertness and mental clarity of Semax balanced by the anti-anxiety steadiness of Selank, without the jitters of a stimulant or the drowsiness of a sedative. Each also shares a BDNF-raising effect, so both support the underlying neuroplasticity that benefits long-term cognitive health.

The bottom line

The choice between Semax and Selank comes down to direction: Semax sharpens focus and protects the brain, while Selank calms anxiety without sedation. Because those effects are complementary, many researchers study them together as a balanced focus-and-calm pairing. For full detail, see their individual research guides.
