Selank’s defining quality in the research is anxiety relief without the downsides of traditional anxiolytics. Studies by Seregin and colleagues documented anxiolytic effects in standard elevated plus-maze models comparable to diazepam, but without the motor impairment or sedation those compounds produce. That is the holy grail for this category: calm without slowing down.
On mechanism, the work has been detailed. Inozemtsev and colleagues (2008) showed that Selank influences the expression of GABA-A receptor subunit genes, providing a molecular basis for its calming effect that does not rely on directly forcing the receptor open the way benzodiazepines do. Other research has reported that Selank raises BDNF and influences enkephalin metabolism, which ties it to mood, resilience, and memory as well as anxiety.
